This solstice supports family, home, nurturing, and taking care of your container, your body and your self care. The energy is feminine, creative, fertile and supportive to collaboration, honoring of Mother Earth and Mother figures, and feeding the seeds that you are planting for new projects and ideas. We are focused on honoring the sun as well, taking in the energy of that life force and filling ourselves up with it. 

Beware of the emotional edge that can either challenge or support you during this time. Think before you speak and act and always consider others. When in doubt, come from a place of kindness and compassion.

There’s an urgency to this moment. We must choose between a world of subjects and a world of objects.

In his book Carpe Jugulum, Terry Pratchett has a character define sin thusly: “Sin, young man, is when you treat people like things.” 

We’re seeing the consequences of this everywhere these days: People are being objectified.  

St. Gregory of Nyssa (c. 335-c. 394) offered a beautiful, succinct, and useful definition of sin. Sin, he [suggested], is a refusal to keep growing.

Namaste asks something huge of us: If the divinity in me recognizes the divinity in you, how could I abuse, debase, violate, or harass? I would, after all, only be punishing myself.

Here we have an antidote to objectification. Something infinite, immortal, mysterious, loving, and alive abides in me and it is from this light that I bow toward that which is infinite, immortal, mysterious, loving, and alive in you. What if this was our set-point, our baseline, the fundamental assumption we had about every single person we encountered? All our reputations precede us: We’re divine.

Mystics from every tradition testify to the aliveness and sentience of all things, that the natural world is lit up with the flame of divinity. This does and must include us. We’re not taught this. In fact, most of what we’re taught opposes this.

A world of objects is a kind of hell. A world of subjects—divine beings honoring the divinity in the other—is surely heaven. May we point our feet toward this heaven and begin the hard and necessary work of walking there.

The Power Path:

Once every 30+ years, the Summer Solstice (Northern Hemisphere) or Winter Solstice (Southern Hemisphere) and Full Moon fall on the same day. This is a rare and powerful event and should be well honored. The Full Moon is at 5:02 AM MDT (Mountain Daylight Time) and brightest the night of the 19th. The Solstice is at 4:34 PM MDT. Take advantage of this powerful energy and celebrate something in your life that you have accomplished. It could be a completion, a decision, a project, a commitment, a new beginning or the achievement of some goal. This is also a social time for gatherings, community events and cooperative participation. Make sure that during this time you stay focused on the positive, on the doors that are opening, and on the potential, instead of dwelling on any fear, resistance, judgment or negativity.  What you put your energy and focus on will grow in this fertile time so make sure it is what you want. Allow yourself to be supported by your community and your friends and be willing to receive all the positive energy that is available to you at this time. The Solstice is always a good time to honor the Sun and the life giving energy it makes available to us on this planet. Any ceremony honoring the sun or the spirit of fire is appropriate. Release something you are leaving behind. Welcome something in that is new, fertile and rich with possibilities. Happy Solstice!
